Hibernate: A Celebration of Rest, Home, and Creativity

Olympia Artspace Alliance (OAA) is excited to announce Hibernate, a new exhibition that showcases the artistry and imagination of local students, now on view through March 2025 in the windows of the Goldberg Building at Capitol Way and Fourth Avenue in downtown Olympia.

This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the restful part of the seasonal cycle, celebrating themes of home, comfort, peace, and rejuvenation. OAA collaborated with teachers and students from Tumwater Middle School, Olympia Waldorf School, Fine Arts Preschool at South Sound Dance, and Grapeview School, inspiring them to explore the season's cozy and restorative nature through their unique art installations.

Here’s a glimpse at the creative works featured in Hibernate:

Olympia Waldorf School

Title: Mother Nature Sleeps Now
This poetic installation celebrates the turning of the seasons and the light within us. Rooted in Waldorf traditions, the piece symbolizes protection, warmth, and finding inner light during winter’s darkness.

Teachers: Ali and Cooper Carras

Grapeview School

Title: Cozy Cabin Community
Second-grade students, guided by Ms. Molly Wheat Baker, embraced the Danish tradition of hygge. Their dioramas, woven rugs, and clay sculptures reflect a celebration of warmth and comfort for both people and animals, inspired by mindfulness and local wildlife hibernation.

Tumwater Middle School

Title: Hibernation
Students envisioned cozy, creative dwellings inspired by woodland creatures and personal sanctuaries. These unique spaces reflect the peace and beauty of winter, inviting viewers to imagine the quiet, interconnected worlds hidden beneath the surface.

Teacher: Natalie Hermanek

Fine Arts Preschool at South Sound Dance

Title: Nestled in a Winter Dream
Guided by Teacher Cyrra Robinson, young students created enchanting dwellings for real and fantastical creatures. This collaborative project celebrates the magic of rest, home, and the imagination of 3- to 5-year-olds.

Each of these installations brings a fresh perspective to the winter season, reminding us of the beauty in rest, creativity, and connection.

Come see Hibernate for yourself and experience the artistry of our community’s youngest creators. Let their works warm your heart this winter!
