Art Needs Space

Janice Arnold in the Old Steam PlantOlympia is known for its vibrant arts community, creative nature and entrepreneurial spirit. Olympia Artspace Alliance is working to ensure that artists have space to do their work.

Artists need studio, gallery, exhibition, classroom and retail space. With creative renovation, neglected buildings in downtown Olympia can be transformed into vibrant community space committed to artists.

The benefits of such a project reach far beyond the artists themselves. Across the country, projects like this have rejuvenated communities like ours.

Like most artists, I need studio space where I can do serious work. My work thrives when I have flexible space, uninterrupted time, and a place where I can repeatedly return — all of which acknowledges and supports the importance of the effort.

Jean Mandeberg, artist

The Olympia Artspace Alliance is currently working with a local developer, who shares our vision for appropriate and affordable artist space. Together, we intend to realize our first foothold in downtown Olympia with a project that includes small apartments and studio spaces designed to meet the needs of local artists.
